ANDY Murray and the rest of the victorious Great Britain Davis Cup team have been honoured at Downing Street, by the Prime Minister and Tennis fan – David Cameron.

Mr Cameron, Andy Murray & the rest of his teammates were joined by the famous trophy, which Great Britain won on Sunday for the first time in 79 years.

The PM wrote on Twitter: ‘I’m delighted to welcome @andy_murray and Great Britain’s Davis Cup team to No 10 after their sensational win.’

Murray was joined by; team captain Leon Smith, James Ward, Dom Inglot and Kyle Edmund.

Murray is in line to win Sports Personality of the Year award as well as being rumoured to be in contention for a knighthood after his heroics that included single and double wins along with his brother Jamie. Murray has also won Wimbledon, US Open and the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Murray won 6-3 7-5 6-3 against David Goffin of Belgium to give Great Britain the Davis Cup with a 3-1 win in a best-of-five tie.

Murray told BBC Sport in his column after sealing the trophy:

Winning the Davis Cup is a huge victory for everyone in the team, but from a personal point of view I don’t see it so much like ticking off another big title from a list,’ he wrote in his BBC Sport column.

There are obviously still two Grand Slams I haven’t won, and the Australian Open is a tournament I would love to win because I’ve been close there so often, reaching the final four times.

And had I got through the fifth set of my semi-final with Novak Djokovic, I would have had an opportunity to win the French Open, so I’m not that far off on the clay.

Hopefully I can use this Davis Cup win as a springboard for next year, to take on the attitude I had in every point and maybe get my first Aussie Open in January.”
